Vivian Wood is the District Clerk for Midland County. She first assumed the duties of this office on January 1, 1983. During her time as District Clerk, she has automated all functions of the office. The past years have seen a tremendous increase in the work load and duties. The use of computers allows the deputies in the office to handle this increase in duties more efficiently.Mrs. Wood is responsible for establishing a Records Management and Preservation program for those documents required by statute to be maintained by the Clerk. Early records are preserved on microfilm while the more recent records are preserved on optical platters through an optical scanning system.
The District Clerk is responsible for filing all Civil, Family, and Felony Criminal cases in the four District Courts of Midland County and all Civil and Family Cases in the two County Courts at Law.
The District Clerk provides support for the District Courts and County Courts at Law, and is registrar, recorder, and custodian of all court pleadings and instruments that are part of any cause of action in all civil and criminal cases. The Clerk indexes and secures all court records, collects filing fees and handles funds held in litigation and money awarded to minors.
A significant part of the duties of this office is dealing with potential Jurors. The clerk is responsible for compiling the lists of persons who serve as jurors for the courts of Midland County and assists the courts with the process of empanelling Grand Juries.
